Making Room in a Small Living Space

If you're living in one of those high rise Houston downtown apartments, then you may be facing a big problem: the lack of space. The main reason why high rises were created is to create a lot of vertical space. However, most units are not really spacious and may not fit your standards. Having said that, it is important try and MAKE space and create enough room in order to make the whole place conducive for living. Here are some tips that will surely help you out:

Hidden and vertical storage

The “space” does not only refer to floor space – also take vertical space into account whether you're living in one of those Houston downtown apartments or not. Having said that, also remember that some pieces of furniture you have right now can actually act as storage. So, what are some good tips, examples and additions you can (or should) make?
  • If you're a first time mover and about to buy a bed, purchase one that has shelves or drawers beneath it. You can store bedding and other stuff, like your books and magazines. If not, then purchase a high one – you can certainly find use for the space underneath your bed.
  • Ask your landlord if you can install wall shelves and ledges to support extra storage. Walls should also be utilized to make space: try installing a wall mounted television as well.
  • If you have tall shelves or cabinets installed, don't just look at the space inside them: take a close look on the space right on top of them. Place off-season clothes as well as unused materials on top of them.

Furniture and rooms with multiple roles and functions

Pieces of furniture should not only serve a specific function: they should also serve multiple roles as well. Remember, you might only be alone in your apartment, so there's no need to purchase traditional furniture or ones that you need at home. Here are some tips and good examples:
  • Instead of multiple beds (for guests), purchase a sofa bed. By doing so, your living room can double as a lounge area during the day and a sleeping area during the night.
  • Getting a dining table for a small living space or apartment, is not an option. Get tables that can serve as a dining area and a workplace for your laptop. You could also purchase a low table, a few cushions, a carpet and you and your guests can sit and eat on the floor.
  • The living room can function as a dining area and it could also function as a temporary bedroom.
Multiple functions erase the need for task-specific pieces of furniture. Resorting to this will save you a lot of space and money at the same time.

There's no need to over-decorate a small living space, such as a one bedroom apartment or a studio unit. Even a single piece of artwork stands out. Be sure though that it doesn't take up a lot of space. You can simply beautify the whole area with curtains and carpets.
